The Samuel Ruben papers 1932-1984.

The Ruben Papers have been divided into two series - Laboratory Notebooks, 1932-84 and Miscellaneous, (1937-69), 1982-84. The notebooks, which contain notes on experiments conducted at Ruben Laboratories, comprise the majority of the collection. Attached to the pages of the notebooks are pieces of metal, wire, cellophane, etc., which were used in Ruben's laboratory experiments. The series of miscellaneous materials consists of Correspondence (1937-69), 1982-84, Reports on Rectifiers, 1937, and Ruben Laboratories Project Summaries, 1983. Some of the correspondence and the project summaries concern Ruben's work with the Duracell company.

Ruben was born in 1900. For most of his life, he served as president of Ruben Laboratories in New Rochelle, New York. His career focused on electrochemistry. He worked extensively with the Duracell company, and is credited with revolutionizing battery technology. He invented the mercury primary cell, the dry electrolyte condenser, the rectifier tube, and flexible wire with ceramic insulation.
